How to Check Your Dog for Ticks

Posted on 08 March 2009 by admin

dogIf you live in areas that have ticks it is important you know how to remove a tick from your pet. Ticks live in brushy, grassy or wooded areas. Ticks can carry diseases like Rocky Mountain spotted fever of Lymms disease.

You need- Tweezers, antiseptic, hand soap, flea and tick dog shampoo, dog medication,  dog brushes and flea combs, latex gloves, cotton swabs, lighter or a match, and dog flea or tick control medications.

After your dog has been outdoors check them for fleas especially if you live in a area known for ticks.

Put latex gloves on to keep yourself from direct contact with the tick and the pets contaminated skin to insure you are protected from any diseases.

Check your pet all over especially the neck, head and ears. If you feel a small pea sized lump you may have found a tick.

Ticks are black, brown, reddish or tan. They can start the size of a pinhead and swell to the size of a grape.

You may want to enlist the help of a family member to distract the pet when extracting the tick.

Grasp the tick with tweezers as close to the pet’s skin as possible and pull the tick straight out using a stead motion. Don’t pull too hard because the head could stay in the pet leading to infection.

Now dispose of the tick, throw in into the fire, squish it in a tissue or flush it down the toilet. Don’t use your hand or feet to squish it.

Apply antiseptic onto your dogs bite.

Remove the gloves and throughly wash your hands.

Clean the tweezers with rubbing alcohol.

Keep your dog washed with tick and flea shampoo and apply a topical medication monthly.
