Are Animals Colorblind?

Posted on 02 December 2008 by admin

dogColor makes up much of the human world but do animals see the same things?

Many test have been done on dogs to see if they can recognize colors. Dogs respond to commands and can remember people or even musical sounds but test have shown they do not see color. A test was done with color cards and treats only after a certain color. When the “food” card was shown dogs did not salivate meaning they did not anticipate food. The same test was done with musical tones and the dog did anticipate food.

Cats have been put through similar test and had the same results.

Monkeys on the other hand were able to separate items by color and get their reward.

Horses can only distinguish between certain colors, like green and yellow.

Some creatures respond very well to colors, bees for instance cam tell apart colors. They probably have this skill in order to tell flowers apart and when tested performed well.

Hens also can see all colors.
