Babies can immediately respond to noise as a reflex action. Babies can barely see during their 1 month of life, only seeing light and dark. During their second month of life they can follow objects with their eyes. As the babies nerves develop between the brain and eyes they can recognize their mom. Soon the baby may start saying “Mama” or “Da-da” as the parents repeat these words to the baby, the baby learns to associate these words with the parents faces. Babies understand words long before they can speak them. At about 8-9 months babies will respond to their names. Familiar objects like bottles and toys may be understood as well as common words such as “more” or “yes”. Speech is learned by imitation. Babies talk frequently after the are 1 year but they do not always make words. At about 18 months a baby can say 10-20 weeks.
